Palace to abide by Congress' decision re barangay, SK polls

Tacloban City (September 7) -- Consistent with its usual stand of upholding the rule of law, the Palace through Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita made it clear that although it is at this moment, not for the postponement of the barangay and SK polls on October 29 as mandated by law, it will abide by the decision of both houses of Congress on the issue.

Secretary Ermita recalled that the senators who attended the Legislative and Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting in Malacanang last month, felt that the barangay and SK polls would push through.

It would also be recalled that the issue of postponement of the forthcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election has already passed the committee level in the House of Representatives and it will be the subject of deliberations in both legislative chambers.

Ermita pointed out that under the 2007 national budget, the government has provided P138.9 million for the SK general registration of voters held last July, and P2.1 billion for the Barangay election, so the government is ready for the October elections.

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the province of Leyte, during its session early this week, passed a resolution supporting the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan synchronized elections.

Authored by Board Member Enrico Albao, the president of the Association of Barangay Chairmen in Leyte, the resolution states that the supposed October 29 elections must be set aside considering the huge cost it will entail the government in holding such elections.

Besides, the country has just been through an electoral process, the ABC President said. It is wise to have too elections in one year, he added. It would be wise to use the funds of about P2 billion for projects that would benefit the people instead, he said.

Vice Governor Bagulaya said "Let us give our people a respite from the elections fever." It is too divisive and deters the implementation of projects that will directly benefit the people, indeed. (PIA 8) [top]
