No new taxes, just enhance existing ones, gov't says
Tacloban City (September 19) -- The government will not be introducing new taxes. Instead, it will just be enhancing the existing ones.
This is the assurance that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Finance Secretary have time and again stated. The President believes that there is no need to levy new taxes. What the Bureau of Internal Revenue needs to do is to strictly implement the existing taxes.
In answer, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has announced that it will implement enhance measure in order to increase tax collection efficiency.
For starters, the Bureau of Internal Revenue is determined to focus on the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program in order to raise the much-needed revenues for the government.
RATE is a program of the BIR against tax evaders. The agency files cases against tax delinquents regardless of their class or status. Under the RATE program, the BIR has already filed numerous cases against movie actors, celebrities, singers, businessmen and politicians.
Aside from the RATE program, the Bureau would also do a more stringent matching of taxpayers' income and withholding tax payments. The BIR officials believe that there are revenues that could be raised from enhanced matching of taxpayers' income declaration, as well as their withholding tax payments.
Already, the Bureau of Internal Revenue is achieving good results. It has exceeded its August collection target having raised P79.5 billion as a result of the enhanced measures.
As the government is doing its best to improve the country's economy for their benefit, the Filipino people, the taxpayers, as law-abiding people, must also do their share by paying their taxes. After all, the taxes they pay, will go back to them in the form of infrastructure projects and government services. (PIA 8) [top]
