LAGAWE, Ifugao (22 September) -- A counseling room for victims of violence was recently inaugurated here.
Mayor Ceasar Cabbigat, in inaugurating the structure, said he has seen the importance of VAWC counseling room because before there was no room like this, there was no privacy and secrecy of the clients.
The chief executive said the family is the basic community in the society hence the government must give due support in the form of implementing programs and projects of the national government that will protect them from any form of violence.
"In Lagawe, there are two ordinances like the Children's Code and the Reproductive Health ordinance that were adopted to support the plight of women and children. As "kapamilya, let's help in curtailing violence in the community, " Cabbigat said.
Records obtained from the Municipal Social Welfare Office here show that there are seven cases of rape for this year, four were filed in court and three not filed; four children were in Conflict With the Law and there are nine cases of Violence Against Women (VAW) in which three were filed and six were not filed.
Roy Dimayuga, the Provincial Coordinator of the UNFPA said that the launching is not merely an occasion for gracing a new structure that is meant to provide welfare and support to victims of VAWC, but also to give tribute to our local heroes the social workers. "Without them, we will not be able to provide services to our women and children in crisis situation.
In doing their works they are also subjected to various harassments and even threats to their lives he said. "Our social workers are our living heroes fighting a war against VAWC with a weapon of commitment to everyone's welfare and belief in God.
On the other hand, Sharon Sarol, of the Municipal Mayor's Office said that VAWC flourishes because perpetrators think they can get away with it and the seeming indifference of some people.
It is worse when the abusers experience no legal punishment and not even social disapproval, Sarol added.
Meanwhile, hand and hand with human development, the LGU is giving priority to infrastructure projects such as the opening of roads. Just recently, the municipal government opened the Abinuan road and the Olilicon - Buyabuyan road.
Imelda Cabbigat, Municipal Social Welfare Officer disclosed that the funds for the said infrastructure projects came from the congressional funds of Ifugao Congressman Solomon Chungalao. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
