PIA Press Release

Bacolod senior citizens body goes to barangays

Bacolod City (24 September) -- The Office of the Senior Citizen's Affairs (OSCA) is launching the "Bringing OSCA to the Barangays" program.

The program aims to reach out to the elderly who are having a hard time to go the OSCA office to secure their Senior Citizen's ID and Privilege Booklets.

"Instead of them coming to us, it will be our OSCA staff who will go to their respective areas, so we can establish a better relationship with one another," OSCA Head Ed Superticioso said.

Superticioso added that through this activity, we also hope to foster more awareness for senior citizens' benefits.

Citizens who are under 60 years old and above are entitled various benefits and privileges under Republic Act 9257 or the Expanded Senior Citizen's Act of 2003.

Among the benefits and privileges that the elderly can avail of are discount on services and commodities through their ID's and Purchase Booklets on medicine and grocery items.

By presenting OSCA-issued Id's they can avail of a 20% on public transportation fare, utilization of hotels, restaurants, recreation centers including funeral and burial services, 20% discount on medicines in all establishments through their medicine booklets and are privilege to have a 5% discount on grocery goods which would not exceed P650 by using their grocery purchase booklets.

To date, OSCA-Bacolod has already recruited more than 12,163 members in 72 total chapters in the city. More than 11,815 already have their own medicine purchase booklets while 11,163 others can now avail of the 5% discount on grocery goods to malls such as in SM-Bacolod, Robinson's Place and Gaisano City and other outlets.

More than 700 member-beneficiaries have undergone basic screening capability and cooperative training seminars recently on candle-making and liquid soap making skills initiated by the OSCA Office in cooperation with the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) led by Estelita Torrecarrion.

OSCA-Bacolod also has allocated more than P230,000 for livelihood programs and financial assistance for its members. A supplemental dry-feeding is also being conducted to more than 63 OSCA members of the city.

Recently, OSCA-Bacolod has also established satellite center in Brgy 16 where members can experience a relaxing day at the Nuga Best Bed while enjoying a free massage from resident-therapists. (OSCA/PIA) [top]
