Consumers month observance on in Sorsogon

by MA Loterete

Sorsogon City (10 October) -- "Consumers Education and Information: Key to Consumer Empowerment" was aptly chosen as the theme for this year's observance of Consumers Month (October) underscoring high concerns on the need to educate and advocate for vigilance among consumers.

In Sorsogon, the Department of Education (DepEd) along with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), spearhead this year's Consumer Month celebration in the province.

DepEd Sorsogon Division assistant superintendent Cesar Medina said that the education office here has already lined up a series of briefings/orientations cum fora in various public schools in the different localities in the province to be participated in by school officials, non-teaching and teaching personnel, and students.

Medina said the academe comprises one of the largest groups of consumers in the community and this sector should be given an utmost attention to know and protect their rights as consumers.

DTI Sorsogon Consumer Welfare Division chief Evelyn Paguio said that the Local Price Coordinating and Consumer Affairs Council (LPCCAC) in the province had organized a speakers bureau and has since been doing rounds in local radio station as part of the massive IEC and advocacy drive on consumer rights protection and other related laws.

DTI is also encouraging consumers to take part in legislation process of policies that ensure protection of their rights, Paguio said.

Other activities lined up for the Consumers Month celebration include the destruction of trade and industry violative hardware and electrical products which were confiscated by DTI Sorsogon monitoring team from some business establishments in the province.

Paguio said most of the confiscated products failed to pass the quality in conformity with the standards observed by the industry in providing safe and world-class products under Republic Act No. 4109 (Philippine Standardization Law) and Executive Order No. 133.

LPCCAC has been constantly coordinating with the different LGUs in a campaign intensifying monitoring and enforcement of laws and policies, including local ordinances, to ensure the protection of rights and welfare of the consumers.

The council also wanted to make consumers down to the grassroots level aware of their rights to reinforce implementation of Price Act and other pertinent laws on consumer welfare and protection.

LPCC also focuses into the increasing number of complaints of consumers on defective weighing scales in the public markets.

Also highlighting the celebration of the Consumers Month, the DTI Sorsogon has slated a Media Forum stressing assurances of immediate actions from concerned government agencies to help consumers in consonance with Republic Act No. 7394 or the Consumer Act, which protects interests of consumers, promotes consumers welfare and provides avenues for resolution of consumer complaints. People must be properly informed of their rights as consumers, then they enjoy protection and can avail of government assistance in cases of dissatisfaction from purchased goods and services. In other related activities, DTI-Bureau of Product Standards also observes the National Standards Week October 8-14; while the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) observes the Meat Safety Awareness Week on October 15-21.
