Preparations up for 1-day province-wide "Clean Up Surigao"

by Fryan E. Abkilan

Surigao del Norte (October 12) -- The provincial government of Surigao del Norte is preparing for a one-day province-wide, clean up drive dubbed as "Clean Up Surigao" on Friday, October 12, with the theme "Community Partnership Towards A Clean and Environment-Friendly Surigao."

The activity is aimed at encouraging community partnership in environmental education and protection efforts of the provincial government. Different sectors in the community such as the academe, business, and religious sectors including Non-Government Organizations (NGO's) all over the city and province have signified and manifested their full support in the Clean Up Surigao as a worthwhile activity.

Gov. Robert Ace Barbers in his message enjoined all Surigaonons to join the provincial government in the campaign to Clean Up the province. "Let us take advantage of the fact that October 12 has been declared a non-working day and use this time to help clean up Surigao," Barbers said.

Meantime, Prov'l Environment and Management Office OIC, Antonieto Charcos, is hoping that with the conduct of a clean up drive on sea beaches, rivers, canals, drainage systems, and other public areas would minimize the litter problem, improve the quality of waters, prevent the spread of diseases and consequently contribute towards a cleaner and healthier province.

Earlier, the governor launched his advocacy program on environment dubbed as "Advocacy for a Clean Environment and its Sustainability" or ACES with the goal of effectively implementing an Integrated Environmental Management Program that adheres to the principle of sustainable development caring for a balance between environmental protection and resource utilization. The ACES program was successfully launched last Tuesday, October 9, 2007 prior to the conduct of the Clean Up Surigao on October 12.

Clean Up Surigao will form part of the Clean Up the World, a year-round community-led environment campaign that takes place in local communities from more than 120 countries and involves an estimated 35 million volunteers each year. It is held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment program (UNEP). (PIA-Surigao del Norte/with PEMO-IEC) [top]
