Coffee company identifies Ifugao as possible producer

by Jina Shirley G. Dacmay

LAGAWE, Ifugao (20 October) -- A prestigious coffee company which operates coffee shops in local and international market has identified Ifugao as a possible producer of coffee for its business.

Arlene Camat of the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPAG) here bared that FIGARRO Company has already made initial coordination with their office to facilitate the growing of quality organic coffee. It has also made partnership with the Lagawe Multi-Purpose Development Cooperative (LMDC) to act as the middleman in the buy and sell of coffee from growers in the province. It is through the cooperative that FIGARRO has to buy.

FIGARRO representatives made visits to existing coffee plantations in Kiangan, Lagawe and Asipulo to check on farm plan requirements of farmers and on the list of coffee growers submitted to their office.

Camat said that FIGARRO representatives were impressed during the farm visits and appreciated how the coffee are organically grown. For better facilitation, FIGARRO gave instructions to OPAG to identify farmers and their farm areas for future references.

With the aim of becoming the "ARABICA Capital" of the province, the municipality of Lagawe has also made initial coordination with the company as a possible market for their products. This will solve the problem on marketing and hopes that coffee growers will be motivated with this development.

Sharon Sarol, Secretary to the Mayor disclosed that while they have a ready market for coffee, they are encouraging the coffee growers here to plant the "arabica" variety because of its high market price and a ready market. This will help sustain economic activities in the province. (PIA Ifugao) [top]
