Cebu's 4th district to showcase Jathropa project

By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu, Philippines (21 October) -- Cebu's 4th congressional district wants to showcase Jathropa production project in support to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's "energy independence" thrust.

Fourth district congressman, Benhur Salimbangon and the regional offices of DENR and DAR signed recently a memorandum of agreement making the towns of the 4th district as the showcase of Jathropa plantation and production project in Central Visayas. President Arroyo witnessed the MOA signing during her recent visit in Cebu.

Salimbangon said Jathropa locally known as "Tuba-Tuba" is seen to be the future in alternative fuel source and there are many areas in the district that are suitable for the plantation.

The DENR here said there are forest lands within the 4th district that can be used for the plantation with the existing farmers and agrarian reform communities (ARCs) as caretakers of the plantations.

Fourth district is composed of the towns of Bantayan, Bogo, Daan Bantayan, Madredijos, Medellin, San Remegio, Santa Fe, Tabugon and Tabuelan.

An executive committee will be created to prepare the plans, policies and guidelines of the project. It will also supervise and monitor its implementation with the DENR, DAR and DA providing the necessary technical assistance to the Jathropa production project. (PIA-Cebu) [top]
