Commentary: Voting for the right candidates

Tacloban City (October 27) -- The future governance in the barangay and in the Sangguniang Kabataan will depend on the exactitude of the decision that the voters on Monday's synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

If the barangay and SK officers will turn out to be unworthy, after all, then the people will have nobody to blame but the voters themselves. The voters are the ones tasked to choose the right candidates who will serve the people well and with utmost dedication.

Before the voters go to the polling places on Monday, therefore, they are expected to have scrutinized all the candidates' qualifications already. They are supposed to have read or listened to the platforms of government of all the candidates. They are supposed to have made their decisions based on several criteria or standards.

First of all, the candidate must be God-loving because it will follow that if he knows how to acknowledge his God and Creator, then he will also acknowledge that his responsibility and duty are to serve the people. And because he is God-loving, he will not dare try to win the support of people through the giving of money.

Secondly, the candidate must be service oriented and people oriented. Dedication to service is the key to becoming a good leader. Otherwise, after the candidate wins, he will no longer be available to the people.

The candidate's integrity must be untainted. If he is known to be a trouble-maker in the barangay when he is not yet an official, only God knows what trouble he will do when he is already in power.

The great number of candidates for Monday's synchronized elections is an indication that there are many Filipinos who are willing to serve.

It is hoped that the voters will not waste the right of suffrage given them by going to the polling places on Monday and voting the right candidates, not because of money, not because of intimidation but because they believe in the leadership capabilities of those who they are voting.
