NNC shares 'eggciting' benefits of eating eggs

Catbalogan City (December 7) -- The National Nutrition Council is once again encouraging the public to consume eggs.

In a message by Executive Director Maria Bernardita Flores during the training on the Young Child Feeding and Pabasa sa Nutrisyon representatives from Priority Two provinces under the Accelerated Hunger-Mitigation Program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the top nutritionist said that egg has a remarkable nutrition profile and is a nutrient-dense food.

She added that it is the cheapest source of high quality protein and a considerable amount of essential vitamins and minerals that are in general, in a form that the body can use easily.

Their advocacy on eggs aims to encourage families to raise poultry as source of food and additional income for the household and increase awareness on the nutritive value of poultry meat and eggs and eventually increase consumption.

The promotion of consumption of eggs the nutrition expert added is contained in the 4th Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos to address nutrient deficiencies in the Filipino diet.

Many people refrain from eating eggs because of its cholesterol content, the message said. Recent studies suggests though that the intake of foods high in saturated fats, e.g butter, chicken skin, pork fat, beef tallow, and lard from animal, and not the intake of dietary cholesterol, increases the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood.

Eggs, Flores noted are cheap sources of high-quality protein, Vitamin a and iron. Mothers and caregivers, she added should become aware that eating an egg a day is alright for as long as an individual watches his overall saturated fat intake.

In the particular training mentioned, one whole day was allotted for promotion of the consumption of egg as an important part of Filipino diet and correcting the misconception about the egg. (PIA-Samar) [top]
