Nueva Vizcaya embarks on Yacon as OTOP product

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (February 8) -- Yacon, the medicinal rootcrop is taking center stage here as one of the major products being developed, promoted and sold under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's One Town, One Product (OTOP).

Ma. Salvacion Castillejos, provincial director of the Department of Trade and Industry(DTI) here said their agency is now focused on the product development of Yacon as OTOP.

She said Yacon production is the major product of Dupax del Norte town for OTOP where they sell it fresh to various buyers in the region and in Metro Manila.

"We are helping to promote this local product through trade fairs and exhibits which helped a lot in identifying additional buyers," Castillejos told PIA.

The fast development of Yacon production in other upland towns in the province has also prompted local entrepreneurs to develop processed products such as Yacon Tea, Yacon Juice, Chicharon and many others.

Castillejos expressed optimism that the fast promotion and popularity of Yacon in the national market would encourage more investors and entrepreneurs in the province to enter the Yacon business.

"We are in the process of developing quality standards for our local products in the province. Once this will be finished, the products will be certified which will enhance their quality once they enter the national or even the international market," Castillejos said. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
