Tagum goes futuristic with new City Hall

by RG Alama

Davao City (15 February) -- With a design that echoes of a futuristic look found in Sci-fi movies, Mayor Rey T. Uy led the groundbreaking ceremony for Tagum City's new seat of Government last Thursday (Feb. 14).

The P200-million futuristic-looking City Hall is located in a 15-hectare lot in Barangay Apokon which was donated by agro-industrialist Jesus V. Ayala. According to Mayor Uy, the new City hall will be surrounded by parks, promenades and playground.

Funding for the project came from a loan secured by the City from the Development Bank of the Philippines.

"The floor area of the City hall is about 9,000 square meters while the atrium measures a floor area of 2,000 square meters. The rest of the area will be parks and playgrounds." Uy said. The New City Hall costs around P200-million, excluding the site development works that includes park, roads and playground. Mayor Uy said the development cost would be around P280-million that includes the parks and playground.

The four-storey City Hall is designed by Sol Flores an Australian-based architect, the structure is mostly in glass and steel it is touted to be one of the most modern city hall in the country in contrast to traditional city halls whose design are mostly inspired by Greco-Roman civic structures. The site plan also designed the City Hall to be located in the middle of a park.

According Mayor Uy, the New City Hall is expected to be completed by Sept. 9, 2009 converted to numeric 9-9-9 is a lucky number according to traditions.

Aside from the Executive department, the New City Hall will house the City's legislature. The old City hall will be demolished to become a park. While the legislative building located alongside the old City hall will be converted into a City library. (PIA XI) [top]
