Communities urged to keep alert, ready during disasters

Tagum City, Davao del Norte (19 February) -- Communities need to be kept alert and ready in responding to disaster and calamity, Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario said.

Addressing the Monday Convocation at the Bulwagang Panlalawigan, del Rosario give a so-called "marching order" to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office to get at the frontline of disaster preparedness.

While nature could not be predicted when to unleash its temper, Del Rosario effects of calamities could be manage to a minimum level through of disaster preparedness schemes and disaster response measures.

"But this entails coordination and cooperation among proper agencies of the government," he said.

Davao del Norte has not lately experienced calamitous events after necessary infrastructure has been set up especially along the Bincungan River which used to overflow causing floods to occur.

But del Rosario wanted disaster threats reduced as he acknowledged their serious effects especially to the poor and vulnerable sectors.

He also pointed the widespread effect of global warming which is causing an ecological imbalance, making everyone anywhere vulnerable as "we are living on the same planet."

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo called on the country's provincial governors to brace themselves in joining the national government address the destructive effects of global warming.

"We must assume the mantle of leadership and work to address the challenge of climate change. Each and every person bears some measure of responsibility for what we have done today and throughout history to diminish our global environment," she said in her speech during the 2nd General Assembly of the League of Provinces of the Philippines held in Camarines Sur.
