Commentary: PGMA's message to Filipinos re 22nd anniversary of EDSA I

Tacloban City (February 25) -- Asked during the February 23 interaction with the local media in Tacloban City, what her message to the people is regarding the 22nd anniversary of EDSA I, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had this to say to the Filipino people:

"Mabuhay. Binabati ko lahat sa pagdiriwang natin ng ika 22nd anniversary of EDSA. It is considered as one of the most important events of the 20th Century, so we celebrate that.

The world celebrated EDSA I; they tolerated EDSA II; they will not forgive an EDSA III because who will want to invest in a country which is giving the perception that it is so hopelessly politically unstable?"

"The Filipino people want stability. The people want economic progress. The people want social justice. That is what we are giving them."

Very brief, yet the message showed that the President has full grasp of the sentiments of the Filipino people. The Filipino people are tired of political bickering and political grandstanding of leaders who are moved by their own selfish interests.

The President has time and again proved her strength as a leader. Amid political upheavals, the President remained focused in her task as the leader of the Filipino nation.

As she declared during the Saturday media interaction in Tacloban, "We plan to work hard in the next two-and-a-half years to fulfill the Philippine Reform Agenda until the day I leave the Presidency in 2010."

"We will fight for the economy, education and the environment. We will work to face the corruption that still plagues the nation. We aim to control the situation and pass with the help of the congressmen and congresswomen, a comprehensive Anti-Corruption Reform Act in 2008."

"We will hold officials accountable if they are found to be corrupt. We will let the chips fall as they may, as the investigations are concluded; and friend and foe alike, are brought to account for their actions."

Perhaps, the detractors should take the example of President Arroyo. A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, the wisdom not to be judgemental but listen to reason and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. She does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of her actions and the integrity of her intent.

The detractors should also remember that instead of instigating unrest and instability, it would be more prudent and wise to lead the Filipino towards peace and prosperity.

Woe to the Filipino people if these detractors would get to be their leaders. How can the people respect leaders who lead the people to violate the rule of law just to achieve their selfish interest? (PIA 8) [top]
