Palace orders probe of newsman's killing
Manila (3 July) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered a thorough investigation of the killing of broadcast journalist Bert Sison, 60, in Sariaya, Quezon Monday night.
"We condemn in the strongest language the killing of Sison in Quezon," Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said.
"An investigation is being ordered to get at the perpetrators," he added.
Motorcycle-riding gunmen killed Sison and slightly wounded one of his daughters, while another daughter, who pretended to be dead,managed to escape unharmed, police said.
A broadcaster of radio station DZAT and correspondent of the weekly "Regional Bulletin," Sison was ambushed as he drove home late Monday with two of his daughters.
He also hosted a weekly radio music program.
Police said the assailants shot Sison's 30-year-old daughter, Liwayway Andaya, in the hand as she fled, slightly wounding her.
Sison's other daughter, 24-year-old Amirah Sison, escaped unscathed by pretending to be dead.
The two daughters are also correspondents of the "Regional Bulletin," which publishes mostly crime stories and articles often critical of politicians. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
