IEC funds on family planning given to LGUs

Nabunturan, Comval (16 July) -- Funds have been released to the local government units (LGUs) for information and education activities on responsible parenting and natural family planning.

Director Maduh A. Damsani of the Population Commission (PopCom) in an interview said the national government is providing funds for such agenda which "President (Gloria) Arroyo is also focusing on."

"Before we had been campaigning on natural family planning but (there was) no enough budget," he said.

Last week (July 11), Damsani turned over to the Governor Arturo T. Uy, a P200,000 worth of cheque which was part of the P402,000 funding for responsible parenting and natural family information and education campaign due for Compostela Valley.

Damsani said other provincial LGUs have availed of the funding and that "they can ask for additional once they have consumed the funds granted them."

With the funds, the provincial government can conduct forum on responsible parenting, parent-child relationship sessions and seminars on natural family planning, he explained.

Such sessions and gatherings require the presence of either parents or both spouses especially that on natural family planning which involves husband-wife decision, he said.

"If in case during the activity, the couple would opt for artificial family planning method, we will refer them to the health centers," Damsani explained.

Damsani said the couple has the choice but "what's important is that we have the funds that can help to strengthen our Filipino family," he said. (PIA XI/Abangan) [top]
