Army says insurgency in NVizcaya not alarming

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (18 July) -- The insurgency in the province is no longer a threat to the overall peace and order situation in the province, a Philippine Army official here said.

Lt. Colonel Benjamin Laguardia, commanding officer of the army's 54th infantry battalion based in Dupax del Sur town said in a briefing during the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) that the peace and order situation in Nueva Vizcaya is "not alarming, peaceful and containable."

"In fact, our main focus now is on the part of Southern Isabela area where insurgency is still very alarming," he stressed.

According to Laguardia, there are 12 sightings of New People's Army (NPA) who are in the process of foraging and recruitment in the province from January to June this year and they cannot expand their forces because of lack of mass-based support from the villagers.

He however said that several villages such as in Ganao, Kimbutan, Biruk and Kanabuan in the towns of Dupax del Sur and Dupax del Norte have been infiltrated by the communists.

"But these NPA units are already remnants and they are small in number," he said. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
