DepEd all set for August 27 NCAE

Pasig City (25 August) -- Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus today announced that DepEd is all set to administer to some 1.5 million fourth year high school students the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) on August 27,2008.

Those who will take the test are graduating students from both public and private schools. The test, which started in 2006, will determine which career path is best after graduation from high school based on the individual test results. It will minimize the mismatch in career choices vis-a-vis skills and inclinations among high school students.

"The annual conduct of the NCAE gives the students and the parents an idea on the field of endeavor most suited to the graduating students thus, allowing for better decision on their choice of career," Lapus said.

The NCAE is similar to the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), which was discontinued in 1994. A major part of the NCAE consists of the general scholastic aptitude test.

In addition, the NCAE also measures a senior high school student's potentials or inclination in such areas as general scholastic aptitude (GSA), technical-vocational aptitude (TVA), entrepreneurial skills, nonverbal ability and occupational interest. The test components are: Scientific Ability, Mathematical Ability, Reading Comprehension, Verbal Ability, Manipulative Skills, Clerical Ability, Non-Verbal Ability, and Entrepreneurial skills.

The NCAE results are at best recommendatory and are not a requisite for admission to college.

This year's examinees have increased by 20% -- from 1.2 million in 2007 to 1.5 million this year. Of the total number of this year's examinees, 1.2 million come from public high school while only over 300,000 examinees come from the private schools.

This year's NCAE will also include 1,200 Out-of-School Youths who are applying for scholarship with the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd).

The DepEd has set up an Action Center at its Central Office in Pasig City to provide information regarding the NCAE as well as handle queries and complaints. For inquiries, contact the National Educational Testing and Research Center (NETRC) at 631-6921.

Of the 1.2 million senior high school students who took the NCAE in school year (SY) 2007-2008, there were 77,869 (6.36%) who obtained high GSA results as compared to 49,066 (3.76%) in SY 2006-2007. A total of 236,441 (19.33%) students obtained high TVA results. There were 717.232 (58.62%) examinees who obtained high aptitude in entrepreneurship.

Some 20,307 students with high GSA and 22, 879 students with high TVA were eligible for scholarships.

In 2007, DepEd's NETRC conducted a survey on the utilization of the NCAE results for SY 2006-2007. NETRC reveals that NCAE elicited high accepted level across among students, parents, school officials and CHEd and TESDA institutions. (DepEd) [top]
