PGMA honors Rizal football team of 7 young boys for winning Norway Cup '08 championship
Manila (29 August) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cited the seven young boy-members of the Rizal Football Team (RIFA) who won the championship of the 11-year old category of the Norway Cup 2008, which was held last July 26 to Aug. 4 in Oslo.
The President received the team members from San Agustin College and Southridge School at the Malacanang's Music Room yesterday afternoon.
"Congratulations to you! Congratulations to the parents! We are very proud of you," the President said as she was presented the team's photograph and trophy.
President Arroyo ordered that the souvenir photograph of the team be placed in the "museum with the other Filipino world champions."
The RIFA is composed of Aldrin Malvarosa, Michael Drilon, Mathew Osit, Paolo Jacob, Set Isay, Rafael Labos, and Lawrence Salindong, team captain.
Three Filipino-Norwegians also joined the team in Oslo. They are twins Lemuel and Leonard Manuel, and Kenneth Gjerde, all residing in Norway.
Team Coach Potenciano Fernandez said the boys, who trained for six months, were lucky to beat eight teams that included those from Denmark, Poland and Germany.
The boys' parents shouldered all the expenses including the registration fee of $385, plane tickets and board and lodging while in Oslo, Fernandez said.
Nike provided the boys' sports shoes. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
