Aid to Lanao del Norte evacuees now reach Php14.034 million

Cagayan de Oro City (29 August) -- Some P14.034 million of assistance have been extended to the Lanao del Norte evacuees as of Aug. 26, 2008.

The evacuees fled their homes after the Aug. 18, 2008 dawn attack by the lawless criminals of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)led by Commander Bravo who burned houses and killed innocent civilians, women, old persons and children in Kauswagan and Kolambugan towns of the province.

Regional Director Carmelito A. Lupo of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Executive Officer of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) in the region said the assistance have been provided by the following agencies:

Dept. of Education (DepEd-10), Php9.7 million for the reconstruction of totally burned 2 school buildings with 5 rooms and a partially burned home economics building, at the Kolambugan Central Elementary School.

National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) Php,1.379 million for 1,500 sacks of rice and financial assistance to transfer the cadaver of the late Renato G. Sobradil from Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte to Balongisan Payaw, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Dept. of Health-Center for Heath Development in Northern Mindanao (DOH-CHDNM), Php1.220 million for medicines and other medical supplies.

Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-10), Php 1.945 million, local government units, Php277,290 and non-government organization/individual donors, Php211,838 for assorted food and non-food items.

Meanwhile, Lupo said the MILF criminal acts resulted in the deaths of 40 persons, injuries of 41 others and 2 persons missing after being hostaged by the group who also burned a total of 31 houses, 14 in Pantar, Kolambugan and 17 in Lapayan, Kauswagan.

Also affected was a total population of 173,804 from 8 barangays of Linamon, 3 barangays of Kauswagan, 8 barangays of Munai, all of Lanao del Norte and Barangay Pugaan of Iligan City of which 9,103 families with 43,550 members were actually displaced, Lupo added. (PIA 10) [top]
