DOH, DTI monitor peanut butter paste and by-products

Iloilo City (3 February) -- The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas is coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here to monitor the reported salmonella contaminated peanut butter paste and by-products from the USA.

Dr. Ariel I. Valencia, OIC Regional Director of DOH-Western Visayas said the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) of DOH-Manila issued Advisory No. 2009-001, regarding immediate recall of selected brands of Peanut Butter, and other Peanut Butter and Peanut Butter Paste containing products from the United States of America.

These peanut butter paste and by-products, Dr. Valencia said should be recalled from all malls and supermarkets because of possible risk of salmonella contamination salmonella contamination.

Health Education and Promotion Officer Helen Rivera of DOH 6 said that salmonella is a bacterium that can cause gastro intestinal disorder and may lead to death.

As a preventive measure, the DOH in Western Visayas also cautioned the public of the other peanut butter containing products like cookies, crackers, cereals candy and ice cream.

Manufacturers were also advised to inform the consumers whether their products contained peanut butter or peanut butter paste from Peanut Corporation of America.

The OIC Director of DOH in Western Visayas said that all BFAD officers in the region were advised to monitor the said products, the DOH press report disclosed. (PIA 6) [top]
