Bangued, Abra (21 February) -- The remotest sitios of Lat-ey, Alliga and Cobcoba in Brgy. Buanao, Bangilo District, Malibcong, Abra are now enjoying the amenities of having an electricity despite its being in the of-grid area.

In his report, Menandro Buenafe, the Provincial Chief of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said the turbine of the micro-hydro electric power which the DOST-Abra had installed in the area can generate 30 kilowatts and is able to provide power supply to the entire barangay of Buanao.

Brgy. Buanao, the birthplace of the late Conrado Balweg, is located within the provincial boundary of Abra and Kalinga and has since been within the off-grid areas of the Abra Electric Cooperative.

The DOST has earlier established micro-hydro electric power project in Brgy. Gacab and Brgy. Dulao, also in Malibcong. These projects were conducted in cooperation with the Diocese of Bangued particularly with the help of Bro. Alois Goldburger, SVD who undertook the community organizing component of the project. Another micro-hydro power project was also established in Lacub last year and the people are now enjoying the benefits of electrification.

The micro-hydro electric power generation projects are a part of the 10-point Agenda of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to provide electricity and water to all barangays throughout the country.

Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro is visiting Abra to see for herself the projects of the DOST-Abra. On her visit of February 20, 2009, she was brought to the businesses that were assisted by the DOST. These are the Balbin Furniture Shop which promotes the use of environment-friendly furniture materials and the V&V Mango Processing that processes dried tropical fruits produced in Abra.

To date, the DOST-Abra is in the process of also assisting the producers of Bangued's famous "inladit" the native chorus, and the pancit canton made of the local squash in Dolores. They are also trying to produce a design for the packaging of the native bibingka of Brgy. Bangbangar in Bangued. (PIA-Abra) [top]
