Tacloban City calendars March 5 for Women's Month launching

Tacloban City (March 5) -- The Tacloban Gender and Development Council, in coordination with the Local Council for Women, has scheduled various activities on March 5, 2009 to officially launch the celebration of Women's Month in the City of Tacloban.

Invited to grace the special occasion is Mayor Maria Lourdes Fernando of the City of Marikina who will speak on the Role of Women in Government Service during the Forum on Republic Act 9262 or Violence Against Women and their Children at the Tacloban City Convention Center at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon.

A press conference will be conducted at the VIP Lounge of the DZR Airport right after Mayor Fernando's arrival.

First on the list of the March 5 activities is the offering of the Holy Mass at the Sto. Nino Church at 6:15 in the morning.

After the mass, a motorcade will be conducted along the major thoroughfares of the City of Tacloban at about 9:00 o'clock in the morning. Assembly area for the motorcade is at Plaza Rizal, Tacloban City.

One of the highlights of the whole-day celebration is the launching of the Help Desk for Women and Children, a crisis unit on anti-trafficking, at the Abucay New Bus Terminal at 10:00 o'clock in the morning.

At 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon, the Forum on Violence Against Women and their Children will focus on the most common forms of violence on women like involuntary prostitution, battered or abused women, incest, among others.

Tacloban City First Councilor and First Lady Cristina Romualdez, who is spearheading the activities, said that she is working hard so that the Women Shelter for the women in crisis situation will have a place to go.

Expected to attend the activities are the women from all the 139 barangays of Tacloban City, the City Government and the Regional offices of government agencies.

This year's women's month celebration theme is "Babae: Yaman Ka ng Bayan." The theme highlights the critical role of women in nation-building and recognizes that women are an important resource who can contribute to the reduction of poverty. (PIA 8) [top]
