23 Ifugao women trained on sewing

by Vency D. Bulayugan

Lamut, Ifugao (6 June) -- Taking the lead in empowering women to become productive, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) here trained 23 indigent women on sewing.

According to Norine Dominong, trainer from the PSWDO, the unemployed women from the different municipalities graduated from their sewing lessons at the Women's Training Center here and are ready to put up their own business which will help their families and the community.

The Ifugao High Speed Sewing Center started its operation in August 2004 with the 20 machines from the DSWD in Baguio City. For the following years, it had been allotted funding by the Provincial Government which sustained the center until now. As of December 2008, it has a total of 241 trainees.

Dominong said that aside from the economic aspect, the PSWDO is trying to strengthen the values formation of women as they become partners in community development. She shared that a trainee said that the training made some changes in her outlook in life. Her low self esteem because she cannot be of help to her family has changed as she can now accept sewing jobs as a source of income.

The Center conducts one batch of sewing training every quarter, with at least 20 trainees per batch. Aside from sewing, trainees are given lifeskills training twice a week. This program is also closely coordinated with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

The center is employing 13 on call sewers who are previous trainees of the center and are paid from the sales of the uniforms they sew. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
