DENR trains prospective deputies in law enforcement

by M Calungsod-Locsin

Koronadal City (14 October) -- In a bid to widen the base of enforcers on environment and natural resources laws, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted an orientation for candidates for deputation as Environment and Natural Resources Officers.

The activity was in line with the thrust of natural resources conservation under the stewardship of DENR Secretary Lito Atienza.

Some 40 participants from five municipalities of the four provinces in the region attended the training on October 7-8, 2009 in Koronadal City. Participating municipalities were Tampakan, South Cotabato; Carmen, (North) Cotabato; Kiamba and Maitum, both of Sarangani Province; and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat Province.

In his opening message, Regional Technical Director Musa C. Saruang thanked the participants for their presence while stressing the duty of all Filipinos. "Every good citizen of the Philippines has the duty and responsibility to protect our environment and conserve our natural resources," Director Saruang said.

The participants were taught on the basic environment and natural resources laws, rules and regulations and paralegal procedures in order to be effective and efficient deputized officers. Under DENR Administrative Order No. 2008-22 which sets the revised guidelines on the deputation of Environment and Natural Resources Officers, applicants should have passed the required orientation or training courses conducted by the DENR. Deputized ENR Officers shall also assist in the conduct of information campaign on environment and natural resources.

During the simple closing program, the participants express their thanks to the DENR for the knowledge that they have gained from the course. "Nagpapasalamat ako sa DENR dahil marami akong natutuhan, kahit sa maikling panahon, upang magampanan ng maayos ang darating na katungkulan (I thank the DENR for the many things that I learned, despite the short period, so that I can perform my future duties properly.), said Chairman Jose Garcia of Barangay Lambayong in nearby Tampakan town.

Regional Technical Director for Forestry Muripaga T. Umpar cited the graduates of the course as future DENR partners. "I call on each and everyone of you to become change agents in your own locality," Director Umpar said.

Upon receipt of deputation order from the Regional Executive Director or the DENR Secretary, the Deputized ENROs will start rendering voluntary service, hence without compensation. (DENR XII/PIA SarGen) [top]
