PGMA plans to establish veteran's office in Tacloban

Palo, Leyte (21 October) -- Filipino World War II veterans residing in Eastern Visayas will no longer find it hard to file their documents in claiming their benefits as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (PGMA) announced today that she will establish a veteran's office in Tacloban City during the 65th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary at the MacArthur Park in Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

The assurance was made by President Arroyo in the presence of the veterans and their relatives in region 8 who attended the occasion live in a nationwide televised regional media interaction hosted by Bombo Radyo-Tacloban Station Manager Marvin Modelo held right at the back of the MacArthur Shrine this municipality.

The President revealed that there are some 500 Filipino World War II veterans residing in Region 8 who filed their claim applications in PVAO in Manila and 200 of them come from Leyte province.

She also said that there are some 18,000 Filipino World War II veterans in the country who have filed their claim applications at present. However, the President added that the applicant will go through the process of verification if he is eligible to receive the claim.

"A veteran who applies for claim of benefits shall present proof of service before his claim is granted", President Arroyo said.

Meanwhile, based on the September 2009 Report of Pension Remittance of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, region 8 registered a total number of 6,461 active pensions comprising of 5,000 old age pensions, 336 disability pensions and 1,125 death pensions to veterans, spouses, minors and parents.

Of the six provinces in Eastern Visayas, Leyte registered the highest number of pension remittances with 3, 786; Samar - 867; Northern Samar - 688; Southern Leyte -585; Eastern Samar - 443 and Biliran with 92. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
