by Rachelle M. Nessia

Cebu City (5 February) -- The Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc. (GP Rehab) is celebrating the National Down Syndrome and Mental Retardation Consciousness Month this February with a slate of activities geared at educating the community about Down Syndrome and mental retardation.

GP Rehab is a non-government organization that works with and for children with disabilities in Metro Dumaguete.

Rolando Villamero, Jr., coordinator of GP Rehab's advocacy, networking and referral program in a statement said that aong the activities scheduled to mark said celebration are TV and radio guestings with therapists and parents of children with Down Syndrome and mental retardation, collaborative poster making contest at Robinson's Place and a Happy Walk from Quezon Park to Robinson's Place on February 26.

On the same day there will be Talent Expose and Culminating Program at the Atrium of Robinson's Place.

Said activities will be participated in by children with Down Syndrome and mental retardation from around the province, their parents, government officials, Special Education and regular teachers, media and civic group members, said Villamero.

The National Down Syndrome and Mental Retardation Consciousness Month is being observed pursuant to Presidential Proclamation Nos. 1358 and 157.

Villamero added that GP Rehab has been organizing several activities in order to instill in people's minds that despite the challenges experienced by persons with Down Syndrome and mental retardation, they can go to regular schools, make friends, enjoy life and get jobs.

Down Syndrom is a lifelong condition in which a person is born with distinct physical features such as a flat face and short neck with some degree of cognitive disability (mental retardation).

Statistics show that about 1 of every 800 babies has Down Syndrome.

On the other hand, mental retardation otherwise known as intellectual disability, is a form of cognitive disability characterized by sub-average mental functioning. (PIA/rmn) [top]
