More children assisted by Zambo city government

Zamboanga City (26 February) -- Assistance to children topped the lists of various clients served by the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (OCSWD) in the implementation of programs and projects in year 2009 here.

OCSWD Officer Francisco Barredo in an interview said a total of 13,875 Day Care Center (DCC) or the pre-school children, aged 3 to 5 years old were served.

These children were catered in the 179 DCCs established in 71 barangays from the 98 barangays of the City, the remaining 27 barangays are still being studied due to their geographical locations, Barredo explained.

In the center the children are taught to sing, draw, color, do exercises and the like. With the uniformed and neatly constructed DCC buildings, it provides excellent learning environment that emphasizes the development of spiritual and social values, creativity and analytical, personal and physical abilities of children.

Enhancement of human relations of children is also introduced for their optimum growth and development, he said.

Barredo also informed assistance were not only confined to children, DCC workers are also given additional incentives provided by the City government. The 100 day care workers citywide are given P1,000.00 monthly subsidy which started in October 2009 and were enrolled in PhilHealth insurance.

Meanwhile, aside from DCC programs, OCSWD also implement programs on Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) that caters to mothers and pregnant women. A total of 100 mothers undergone nutrition training under the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon in the ten (10) piloted barangays of the City.

On street children, a total of 592 were assisted aging 7 to 17 years old. These are brought into the street children center where they are trained to develop themselves to have positive outlook and behavior towards life.

While inside the center, the children undergo counseling, functional literacy sessions, sports development and socio-cultural activities, values formation and spiritual enrichment, livelihood skills development among others, Barredo said.

These and other programs and projects of the local government continue to be implemented with the assistance from partner Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) including fast food chains and through the cooperation of the communities. Barredo added. (fnm/PIA-Zamboanga City) [top]
