Schools, Negros Oriental partner for Earth Hour 2010

by Rachelle M. Nessia

Dumaguete City (29 March) -- The provincial government here together with five schools in Dumaguete City led the countdown to a successful Earth Hour 2010 in the city.

A sizable crowd composed of students and representatives from the academe, private and business sectors, civil society and government and religious groups gathered in front of the Provincial Capitol to witness the countdown and the sequential dimming and turning off of lights of the entire Freedom Park and the Capitol building from 8:30 until 9:30 p.m.

Only candles kept the steps of the Capitol lighted while performing groups and other activities entertained the participants until power was switched back on, said Earth Hour 2010-Dumaguete City Launch Coordinator Mark Raygan Garcia in a statement.

Garcia said the provincial government and the organizing schools each gave a commitment of support during the countdown. A commitment wall was also set up in the area where the public wrote their messages.

A coordinated local launching of Earth Hour started in Dumaguete City in 2009 when Silliman University was tapped by the Department of Energy and the World Wildlife Fund to be the focal institution in the city. Last year?s celebration spearheaded by the same schools included a fiml showing, a forum, and an environmental theatrical performance at the Quezon Park. Silliman continues to lead efforts at increasing public awareness of Earth Hour this year.

Earth Hour is a symbolic act of switching off of lights for an hour to draw everyone?s attention, most especially decision-makers in government, to the issue of climate change. Last year, it inspired 1 billion people in 4,100 cities and 88 countries to switch off their lights. Over 10 million Filipinos in 647 towns, cities and municipalities joined in ? more than anywhere else on Earth. This year Earth Hour Philippines aims for the participation of over 15 million Filipinos in over 1,000 towns and cities nationwide. Globally, 807 cities, towns and cities in 82 countries across every continent have already signed up. (PIA/RMN) [top]
