PIA Press Release

Elections on May 10 a go, Comelec says

Tacloban City (May 7) -- The election on May 10 will push through, Commission on Election Region 8 Director Nick Mendros assured on Thursday.

At the Harampang Ha PIA at Gerry's Grill Tacloban, Director Mendros said that the PCOS memory cards have been sent to Manila and the replacements are expected to arrive on May 7.

He added that the vans with PNP and military convoys, which will deliver the PCOS machines for the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar left the PCOS hub in Tacloban at 5:00 o'clock in the morning of May 6.

At 7:00 o'clock in the morning of May 6, the convoy which will deliver the PCOS machines for the provinces of Southern Leyte, Biliran, the 5th, 3rd and 4th District of Leyte took off from the PCOS hub.

The PCOS machines for the first and second districts of Leyte were set to be delivered also on May 6. These are nearer so the convoy for these areas left the PCOS hub last, Director Mendros informed.

The total number of PCOS machines for Region 8 is 5,341 which includes the 5,110 which will be used in the differed voting precincts and the contingency PCOS machines, one each to be given to every municipality.

Aside from the PCOS machines, the generator sets, ballot boxes, kits, satellite for voting areas without cell sites and other election paraphernalia.

Reports received from several towns of Leyte showed that the PCOS machines have been received in the polling places in the barangays, in the afternoon of May 6.

Director Mendros explained that the Automated Election in the Philippines is such that the voting is still manual. Only the counting or canvassing is automated.

If the PCOS machines will have malfunction on May 10, the voting will continue and the filled ballots will be placed in the ballot boxes. The BEIs will then bring the ballots in another polling place where the PCOS is not malfunctioning and the ballots will be inserted one by one.

Do not be afraid, Director Mendros told the voters. The Comelec is doing its best to make the May 10 elections successful. (PIA 8) [top]
