Use energy judiciously during elections, DOE urges

Iloilo City (7 May) -- The Department of Energy (DOE) has advised the public, particularly government agencies, those from the Department of Education, media practitioners, non-government organizations, poll watchers and the observers, to judiciously use energy during elections.

DOE-Visayas Field Office Director Antonio Labios issued this advise in the event of thin power reserves of the country, as they keep their mandate of providing Filipinos access to quality, continuous and safe resources of energy.

Labios said in a press release, that in this critical junction of history when the Filipinos will participate in an automated elections, it is best that everyone should exercise restraint in using electricity.

For schools, DOE requests that use of unnecessary lights and appliances be curbed, while government offices and the general public are also requested to refrain from unnecessary use of electricity in their offices and homes, since May 10 is a holiday.

For members of the media and other organizations and entities, and poll watchers who will observe the elections, DOE requests that they should provide their own power requirements, and refrain from using outlets/electricity from the voting centers.

Labios said this DOE advisory applies to all 36,679 designated voting centers nationwide (7,555 in Metro Manila, 10,213 in the Visayas and 9,983 in Mindanao), from May 8-12, 2010.

The DOE is tasked by RA7638 or the Department of Energy Act of 1992) to prepare, integrate, coordinate, supervise and control all plans, projects and activities of the government as far as energy exploration, development, utilization, distribution and conservation. (DOE/PIA6/ESS) [top]
