Lagawe, Ifugao (15 May) -- Farmers affected of the dry spell here were given aid from the municipal government through the Philippine National Red Cross who facilitated the distribution of relief goods.
Margarita Dumlao, Chapter and Interim Administrator of PNRC of the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya and Ifugao, said 2,850 individuals were each given a 3.5 kilos rice assistance.
"The beneficiaries are victims of the El Nino phenomenon who have no other source of income and dependent only in farming as a source of living", Dumlao said.
Lagawe is one of the municipalities in the prov declared under the state of calamity due to the effect of the dry spell.
Dumlao stated that the list of recipients submitted by the barangay captains were verified first by the PNRC and the Lagawe Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) to determine if these people are the real beneficiaries.
She further explained that the PNRC is the only office authorized by the Commission on Election (COMELEC) to distribute relief assistance to calamity victims during the election period to 'avoid political color'.
Meanwhile, Fr. Marion Buyagawan, School Director of the Don Bosco High School (DBHS), said that some PPCRV volunteers were tapped to repack the 200 sacks of rice for distribution to the El Nino victims.
"Aside of repacking the rice, the volunteers also helped the Red Cross in delivering the goods to the different barangays where the beneficiaries located", Buyagawan said. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
