El Niņo affects food production in Zamboanga Norte
Dipolog City (9 June) -- "Climate change has really affected food production in the province."
This was how Senior Agriculturist Noli L. Bengua of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) assessed the effect of the El Niņo phenomenon on the agriculture sector in the area.
Bengua said that with the "abnormal climate" these days, the produce of rice and corn farmers has been greatly affected.
"Hardest hit by the dry spell are the rice farms with no irrigation system," Bengua explained.
Bengua, therefore, urged the farmers to visit the OPA so they would be guided as to the right crops to plant with this unpredictable climate.
It can be recalled that the OPA has reported a damage wrought by the onslaught of El Nino this year to crops in the entire province amounting to P30.2 million. (PF/PIA-ZN) [top]
