by Ninfa Quirante

Catbalogan City (11 June) -- As the 2010 Census and Housing Population is nearing its final days, let us take a look at the past census features in Samar province.

In a fact sheet distributed by the National statistics Office (NSO) Samar, it said that during the August 2007 census, Samar?s total headcount was 695,149 that was with an increase of 54,025 from the census in the year 2000 of 641,124.

Said increase drew an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 1.12 percent for the 7-year period.

NSO analyzed that this was significantly lower compared to the PGR of 18.82 as recorded for the period 1995 to 2000.

Average household size, NSO revealed that it was 5.1 the same figure reported in Census 2000.

As to area and population, Calbayog City was considered the largest area in terms of population size.

Calbayog City has the largest population share with 23.5 percent among the two cities and the 24 municipalities. Catbalogan City followed Calbayog with 13.3 percent, then Basey, Daram and Sta Rita.

Populated area was Matuginao town with 0.9 percent share of the total provincial population.

The 2007 census also revealed that there were 107 males to 100 females.

A total 359,176 males and 334,713 females was recorded, thus computing the ratio of 107 males to 100 females.

Although the document did not contain the voters population, it reported that 51.7 percent were males while 48.3 percent were females.

Further, the census showed that more males again prefer to be single or unmarried numbering to 280,550; as compared to unmarried women numbering 241,706.

Meanwhile females prominently figured in having attained a higher level of education than men.

Of the total household population of five years old and over, 52.7 percent had attended or finished elementary education, 20.9 percent has reached or completed high school, 4.7 percent were college undergraduates and 5.2 percent were academic degree holders. (PIA Samar with NSO) [top]
