PIA Press Release

Crime volume in Region 8 plunges in first semester of 2010

Tacloban City (September 8) -- The aggregate total crime volume reported for the period January to June 2010 is recorded at 2,233 incidents which is 11,586 incidents lower as compared to the same period last year which was pegged at 13,819.

Police Chief Superintendent Drusillo Bolodo, PNP 8 Assistant Regional Director for Administration, announced this during the PIA Panindugan CATV program's Ugnayan sa Mamamayan episode held in connection with the National Crime Prevention Week celebration at the Robinson's Place on Monday, September 6, 2010.

Of this figure, 1,514 are categorized as index crimes while 719 are non-index crimes. As compared to the same period of last year, there is a decrease of 6,073 incidents in the index and a decrease of 5,513 incidents in the non-index crimes respectively.

The six provincial directors through a phone patch interview confirmed this, during the same program. The general trend is a decrease in the crime volume in all the provinces in the Region.

Among the eight (8) areas of law enforcement jurisdiction of Region 8, the City of Tacloban recorded the highest Crime Volume with 521 incidents while Northern Samar Law Enforcement Jurisdiction recorded the lowest with 160 incidents.

The reported 1,514 index crimes were classified into crimes against person which consist of 758 incidents while 756 incidents are crimes against property.

Of the 758 reported crimes against person, 217 are attributed to murder, 69 are homicide cases, 431 for physical injuries while 41 are rape cases.

On the other hand, of the reported 756 crimes against property, 197 are robbery cases, 540 for theft, 18 for car napping while 1 accounted for cattle rustling case.

Crime against persons, particularly murder and homicide cases, were more prevalent in Samar Province and may be due to rapid movement of instruments of crimes and vast areas that could be accessed only after much difficulty by the local governance and law enforcement.

Comparatively, General Bolodo said, Leyte is three times more populated than Northern and Eastern Samar and two times more than Samar, yet, Leyte has the second lowest Average Monthly Crime Rate (AMCR) at 4. 62 among the eight Areas of Law Enforcement Jurisdiction of Eastern Visayas Region.

Tacloban City posted a higher incidence of crimes against property (Robbery and Theft) which is prevalent among highly built-up areas, ARD Bolodo said. (PIA 8) [top]
