Tree-planting to cap Maasin employees’ week celebration

By Bong Pedalino

MAASIN CITY (10 October) -- Employees of the city hall here take time out from their routines this week to participate, one way or the other, on the observance of employees’ week, with sports and literary competitions at stake, and some other wholesome fun.

This year’s week-long celebration is the city’s 13th observance thus far and just like similar observances in the past, a tree-planting activity will close the week prior to the awarding night, said Vice-Mayor Maloney Samaco in the radio program “Aksyon, Solusyon, Inisyatibo” (ASI) over radio station DYDM last week.

“We will still have a tree-planting, this time at barangay Bogo, in the pet reforestation project of Cong. Roger Mercado. This will be on Friday, October 13, the last day of the sports competition, and in the evening of that day will be the awarding ceremony at the city gym,” Vice-Mayor Samaco said.

He added that throughout the week all public transactions in various city offices will go on as normal because a skeletal force per office will take care on this.

The Vice-Mayor also cited the legal basis for such a yearly activity, like a local ordinance and memo circulars from the DILG declaring the month of October as Local Government Month and, in particular, October 10 as Local Government Day.

The activities, which started yesterday, October 9, blasted off with a parade, an opening program at the city gym, and a cheering squad competition right after the program.

In the afternoon was a Holy Mass at the gym followed by a basketball exhibition game played by provincial officials and heads of offices versus city officials, heads of offices, and some barangay captains.

It was learned that all the employees were divided into three teams – the Aksyon, Solusyon, and Inisyatibo teams for the purpose of the friendly and healthy competitions.

But the annual city employees’ week would not be complete without a tree-planting which has become a signature mark in every celebration. In the past two years, mangroves were planted off the coast of barangay Lib-ug and barangay Bilibol.

This time the site of the tree-planting will be in the mountains. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
