Cebu search for child-labor-free firm is on

By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu City (10 October) -- The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) launched this year’s search for the “Child-Friendly Firm Award,” as part of an advocacy campaign to promote a Child-Labor Free and Child-Friendly Workplace as a Corporate Social Responsibility program of the above institutions.

CCCI is inviting the public to nominate businesses and organizations while hotels and resort industries; shipping, malls and other foundations and NGOs are encouraged to apply in any of the two categories: (a) The Child Labor Free Recognition which is open to all companies with less than 200 employees; (b) Child-Friendly Recognition which is open to two types of organizations; the Business and Non-Business Organization.

The Child-Friendly Firm Award documents and recognizes innovative efforts and good practices of business enterprises towards the Child-Friendly Movement (CFM). This is also implemented to create more awareness and advocacies for diverging issues on child labor and showcase the best practices of child-friendly firms.

ECOP, established a Child Labor-Free and Child-Friendly Recognition program to highlight the many examples adopted by the business sector through its corporate policies and programs that uphold the rights of children, protect their interests, and promote their welfare.

According to ECOP, through this program, companies are encouraged to apply their policies and practices to their supply chain especially in the informal sector where conditions are less regulated. ECOP said, a Child-Friendly Firm is any business enterprise that creates, maintains, and sustains culture that is friendly to the children, directly or indirectly affected by its business activities.

The International Labor organization on one hand said, the core idea behind this project is to promote the recognition of business that are seriously taking steps to eliminate child labor, and other forms of child exploitation.

Meanwhile, the CCCI has already organized the steering committee of the project. It is chaired by its CCCI’s Corporate Social responsibility Committee under Nonoy Espeleta and representatives of companies that have been recognized as Child-Friendly Firms in 2001 and 2002, i.e. Lexmark International (Phil.) Inc., Friendly care Foundation, Inc., Fairchild Semiconductor’s Hongkong Ltd., Shangri-la’s Mactan Island resort and Norkis Trading Corporation. The Screening Committee on the other hand is consist of prominent personalities from business, labor, DOLE, media, academe and an NGO.

Nomination forms and other IEC support materials and guidelines are available at the CCCI office, or call Bonchit Tagayuna at telephone numbers 2321421-24 local 106 for more information and details of the awards. (PIA-Cebu) [top]
