UN breaks record in anti-poverty drive; 2.3M Filipinos join

Quezon City (20 October) -- The United Nations' Global StandUp campaign has set a new official Guinness World record for the largest number of people to pledge to work against extreme poverty, the UN system in the Philippines said.

Dino Subingsubing, information coordination officer of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), said a total of 23.5 million worldwide stood up and pledged to fight extreme poverty.

Of the number, 2.3 million were Filipinos, which Subingsubing said meant that one in 10 people who stood up was a Filipino.

The number of Filipinos who participated in the campaign far exceeded the target of one million and was validated by the accounting and auditing company Sycip, Gorres, and Velayo (SGV), Subingsubing said.

The anti-poverty campaign is part of the UN Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), which targets by 2015 to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development.
