LAGAWE, Ifugao (23 October) -- The provincial government and national line agencies here have come together last October 16 to take part and be one with other member countries in their pledge to fight poverty worldwide.
Carmelita Buyuccan, Provincial Planning and Development Officer explained that the program “Tumayo tayo Laban sa Kahirapan, Tuparin ang MDGs” (Stand Up Against Poverty, Stand Up for The Millenium Development Goals) is part of a worldwide campaign of the United Nations to remind member-countries of the global vow to eradicate poverty which they drafted in the Millenium Development Goals(MGDs) in 2000.
To further the agenda of accelerated implementation of actions for the MDGs through the promotion of human security, strengthening of governance, and reducing disparity, the UN system in the Philippines has capitalized on local activities to launch and strengthen awareness about the MDGs and the Philippines commitment to attaining them.
According to Buyuccan, the goals have eight time-bound, specific targets which the Philippine envisioned to achieve by year 2015.
These are Eradicating Extreme Poverty and hunger, Achieve Universal Primary Education, Promote Gender Equality and Empowering women, Reduce Child Mortality, Improve Maternal Health, Combat the Spread of HIV, Acute Immune Deficiency (AIDS), Malaria and other diseases; Ensure Environmental Sustainability; and Develop Global Partnerships for Development.
Buyuccan lauded the province for their efforts which caused the extrication of Ifugao in the list of the 20 poorest provinces nationwide. She encouraged government employees and the non- government sectors and other stakeholders to sustain and work even more so that Ifugao families and house holds will be delivered from extreme poverty.
