PIA Press Release

Continued support of NFA urged

Iloilo City (1 October) -- National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Jessup Navarro urged the support and cooperation of the NFA's employees and staff in sustaining the mission and continuing the noble goals and objectives of the agency as it celebrates its 35th anniversary.

In his message read by NFA VI Assistant Regional Director Vilma Zarraga during a program celebrating the event, Navarro said the occasion is especially significant to him because this is the first NFA anniversary under his administration.

"Today is a red-letter day as I accept the challenge that goes with leading an organization tasked to perform a delicate mission of securing the staple food of our people", said Navarro.

Navarro also commended those in the NFA as he cited some of the remarkable firsts in the history of the food industry during the last 35 years that included self-sufficiency in rice during the early days of existence, a dramatic entry into the export market, massive facility build-up, a stable grains market, and significant strides in postharvest technology that made the Philippines a model in ASEAN region.

He further noted that despite doubts about the agency's relevance in the entire national development process, yet, when rice prices start to rise, when the poor start to worry about having food on the table, when remote areas are isolated by natural calamities, people look up to the NFA to secure their most basic food.

"Through the good times and bad, we have lived up to our twin mandates of food security and stabilization so that our people, especially the low-income sector of our society are assured of available, affordable and accessible staple food at all times. To me this is the real meaning of our celebration; not giving up and letting go", said Navarro.

Aside from the messages given by Navarro and NFA 6 Director Javier Lozada, the occasion was also marked with other activities.

With the theme "Tatlumpu't limang taong patuloy na paglilingkod sa sambayanang Pilipino", the event started last September 26, 2007 with a thanksgiving mass officiated by Fr. Everardo Cansancio, Spiritual Director of the Charismatic Movement.

The celebration was further highlighted by a mini-caravan inside the NFA compound participated in by the various NFA stakeholders followed by a simple thanksgiving luncheon.

In the afternoon, group contests such as the singing idol contest and political rally contests were held. The affair ended with a dance session until late hours of the afternoon. (PIA) [top]
