PIA Press Release

Surigao City website qualifies for web awards semifinals

by Harvey Entendez Diaz

SURIGAO CITY (October 1) -- The official Web site of the City Government of Surigao,, is officially competing for the Best eLGU City Web Site in the prestigious 10th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) after Media G8way Corp., the event organizers of the PWA, released Thursday the official list of Web sites qualified for the pre-finals round of the PWA. Five other LGU Web sites will be contending for the title, namely: Balanga City (, Lucena City (, Marikina City (, Ormoc City (, and Tagum City ( underwent a general design overhaul late last year after the City Computerization Committee created the Management Information Team, the special information technology (IT) technical working group of the City of Surigao. The old design of the Web site was based on the National Computer Center (NCC)-made template. The site was soft-lauched in April of this year and, from thereon, served as the Internet window of the city to the local community and Suriganons abroad.

The city Web site not only offers basic information, as it also served as a one-stop portal for people who want fast access to information related to the city, such as legislated ordinances, application forms for permits, a directory of offices and business establishments and a list of procurement needs of the city government. Additinally, a community forum where Suriganons from all walks of life can discuss current issues and virtually all topics under the sun. A section was also produced exclusively for business investors.

The eLGU category was added to the roster of categories in the PWA by Media G8way in close coordination with the NCC to pay tribute to local government units that use the power of the Internet and the World Wide Web in delivering services and information in electronic format to its respective constituents and stakeholders like procedures on life events, electronic procurement of goods and services, and information on business investment and tourism.

One feature of the PWA is people can vote for the Web sites that they think deserved to be awarded. As such, Surigaonons can vote for online or through cellular phones using text messaging. Once surpasses the semi-final round, it will step up to the finals round where only five Web sites will be shortlisted. Winners of the 10th PWA will be announced on November 23, 2007, at Promenade, Greenhills, San Juan City, Metro Manila.
