13th Siargao Int'l Surfing Competition boosts Surigao del Norte surfing capital

SURIGAO DEL NORTE (October 1) -- The holding of the 13th Siargao International Surfing Competition dubbed as 1st Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational in Gen. Luna, Surigao del Norte has given a boost to the efforts of the province to promote itself as a surfing paradise in the country.

Some 45 surfing enthusiasts from different parts of the world vied for honors in surfing competition, which started on September 24 and ended Saturday, September 29. The competition also brought in scores of local and foreign visitors.

Australia's surfer Wade Goodall emerged as the champion of the competition toppling the defending Champion last year Ryan Hipwood of Mermaid Beach, Queensland, Australia. Sunshine Coast Australian surfing star Goodall received the top prize of USD7, 500.00 which was presented for the first time by surfing renowned Billabong, a surfing firm based in Australia during the culmination ceremony held last Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007.

Other winners include Australian Nick Vasicek who got the 1st runner-up, 2nd runner up went to Dave Reardon Smith of Australia, and the 3rd runner up went to Makua Rothman of Hawaii.

The last leg of the competition was also witnessed by the daughter of the president of the Republic of the Philippines, Lulu Macapagal-Arroyo.

The island of Siargao, with its good waves and white-sand beaches, served as the venue of the series of surfing competitions in the past years of the province, which was held through the initiative of the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte and the Department of Tourism.
