Mlang tie up to organize Barangay Information Networks

Mlang, North Cotabato (11 February) -- The Philippine Information Agency, Region 12, and the Local Government Unit of Mlang, North Cotabato will pilot four barangays for the community based information program which is designed to elevate the grassroots awareness on government programs and projects for their better appreciation and participation.

Nueva Vida, Lika, Dalipe and Katipunan in Mlang, the focused barangays for the project were cited for the strong leadership and participative residents in community undertakings by Mayor Joselito Piņol who stressed the primordial role in the development of the community in particular and the country in general.

PIA 12 Director Olivia T. Sudaria and Mlang Public Information Officer Mary Ann Cortado held initial consultations on February 7 with the barangay officials of Dalipe headed by Chairman Vicente V alenzuela and Katipunan led by Chairman Edwin Fernando who proved to be receptive to the project. The same consultations were conducted by Mlang Information Office in Nueva Vida and Lika whose leaders warmly welcomed the implementation of the information network project in their barangays.

Planning-Workshops to be participated in by the barangay leaders and heads of sectoral organizations were scheduled on the third and fourth weeks of February aimed to formulate communication strategies based on the information needs identified by the participants.

Dr. Cortado pointed out that this communication project will be a vehicle to bridge the gaps in the implementation of other projects in the barangays and in the long run will help change attitude of the people who look at government as the provider even of their meager needs without considering their social responsibility.

Director Sudaria underscored the importance of the organization of the Barangay Development Information Council which will serve as the policy making body and help in the conduct of the information, education and communication activities. She suggested that the council has to choose an information officer who shall perform specific information, education and communication tasks.

The PIA 12 Director suggested for the establishment of the Barangay Development Information Center which will serve as a one stop information kiosk offering library services and as a source of basic information about government and other areas of concerns of the barangay populace.

Mayor Piņol looks forward to a successful evolution of the project which will be formally launched in March. (OTS/PIA 12) [top]
