PGMA launches "Proud Harvest" vegetable-enriched canton noodles

Manila (30 July) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will launch today (Wednesday) the "Proud Harvest" vegetable-enriched pancit canton noodles at the Dagonoy Public Market in San Andres, Bukid in Manila.

Presidential Management Staff Director-General Cerge Remonde, who is also the Cabinet oversight official of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises development, and Presidential Consultant on Entrepreneurship Joey Ma. Concepcion III will join the President in the product launch.

The squash-enriched noodle in 250-gram packs is the first commercial scale vegetable-enriched product of RFM Corporation, Benguet State University (BSU), DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute and small -scale processors under the BSU "Benguet Vegetable Processing Center Project" which was funded by the President's Social Fund.

The President released during her visit to La Trinidad, Benguet last Holy Week a P10- million financial assistance to establish the vegetable processing center that will convert fresh agricultural produce from the region into high quality processed food.

The project is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, increase income of farmers, provide entrepreneurial assistance to small-scale noodle processors and provide affordable and nutritious foodstuffs for the consumer public, especially the poor.

The noodles are expected to hit the government's "Tindahan Natin" next month.

Noodle production became a priority of the BSU following the directive last March of the President to mass produce the product and help cushion the impact of soaring food and fuel prices on the poor.

To accelerate the project and provide concerted approach, an Inter-Agency Group was formed led by the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute with the DSWD, DA,BSU,DTI, Benguet Provincial Government and the private sector represented by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, food and beverage company RFM Food Corporation, and Liwayway Marketing Corporation as members.

The project also tapped the assistance of Monde Nissin, maker of "Lucky Me" noodles and other government agencies like the National Food Authority (NFA) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) for continuous product development as well as assistance in distributing and promoting vegetable noodles.
