ADB to give $850,000 grant for watershed

Tabuk City, Kalinga (21 February) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) offers financial assistance for the protection of ecosystems in selected regions of the country under the Integrated Natural Resources and Environmental Management (INREM).

According to Provincial Planning and Development Officer Gerry Donaal, the assistance comes in the form of grant amounting to $850.000.00 funded by the government of Japan.

He said the project will be implemented in seven years on selected watersheds which are the Chico, Agno, Marikina in Luzon; Tigum Aganan and Wahig-Inabanga in the Visayas; and lake Lanao and Muleta/Manupali watersheds in Mindanao.

The program will be undertaken in two phases - Phase 1 covers the preparation of a feasibility study for INREM sector project, which includes the assessment of organizational capacities and desire for institutional change. Phase 2 will be the preparation of the strategy and investment program for longer-term investments for a period o 10-15 years, Donaal said.

He said ADB sponsored the multi-sectoral Luzon forum workshop held recently in Baguio City where the participants shared their management practices of natural resources.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is the lead agency in the implementation of the program including the comprehensive livelihood and emergency employment program under the resiliency plan of Pres. Arroyo to create jobs and help ease the effects of the global financial crunch. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
