"Feria" leaves 500 homeless; Samar PDCC activated

By Alice Nicart

Borongan, Eastern Samar (24 June) -- More or less 500 families went homeless in Can-avid town as tropical storm "Feria" wreaked havoc at about 2:10PM yesterday in several municipalities of Eastern Samar province.

Initial verbal report from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Can-avid said that damaged houses resulted from strong winds which suddenly hovered the area for about two hours.

Social Worker Officer Verina Amoyo described the wind to have moved in a Tornado-like direction as she could see a coconut tree twist by itself and moved upward.

"From the window, I saw a wide span of snow-white air that covered the poblacion as stronger winds continued to violently blow up some humble shanties and aged-old roofing", Amoyo recalled "Feria's" stormy behavior which she said the first ever she saw in her entire life.

In a brief interview with Mayor Toytoy Germino who canceled today a very important meeting with DAR Sec. Naser Pangandaman noticed that ‘Feria" performed her not-so-funny joke very selectively.

"I noticed as I drove back home, some barangays had no trees toppled down to the highways, even as I approached Can-avid bridge. But down here to the town proper, I seem not to understand, why Can-avid had been singled out by this tropical storm?," Mayor Germino's unanswered question was heard.

Initial damage report from Can-avid includes the ff:

  • Damaged roofing of three classrooms of Can-avid Central Elementary School
  • Damaged roofing of newly renovated buildings of ESSU
  • Estimated 500 families homeless
  • An injured tricycle driver with his tricycle severely damaged when a tree fell upon it.

"Feria" likewise rendered the entire province in total brown- out but when the rain stopped, a team that cleared the highways with fallen trees was quickly deployed by the Provincial Engineering Office.

Moreover, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) convened which immediately put the following into action among others:

Heavy equipment of the province are on stand-by, relief committee is on stand-by, hot line number is set-up being 055-560-90-60, activation of emergency response teams which stand by on round the clock rotation. (PIA-Eastern Samar) [top]
