Vigan City (1 October) -- Going all-out against all forms of illegal gambling, particularly jueteng, Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) has put an end to the illegal numbers game in all the four provinces of the Ilocos Region.
Ilocos region police director Chief Superintendent Orlando M. Mabutas disclosed that, in keeping with the directive of PNP chief Police Director General Raul Bacalzo, the Region 1 police conducted no let-up operations against jueteng.
The intensified drive produced excellent results, with jueteng stamped out in all 125 cities and municipalities of the region, based on written certifications to that effect signed by the respective Local Chief Executive (Mayor), Chief of Police, and/or local religious leaders.
Even retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz, who blew the whistle on jueteng, publicly revealed that jueteng has stopped in Pangasinan and other northern provinces.
PRO1 records on illegal gambling show that from January to September 27 this year, a total of 122 raids were conducted with 268 persons arrested. Ninety-eight (98) cases were filed in court.
Even with this welcome development, the Region 1 police vows to remain vigilant to prevent the possible resurgence of jueteng in any part of the region.
"We will continue to do our duty with the support of the community," Mabutas said. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
