Army, NPA rebels clash in Cagayan

Narvacan, Ilocos Sur (7 October) -- A ranking official of the Philippine Army confirmed Wednesday about the encounter between the government troopers and the New People's Army (NPA) rebels last week in the outskirt barangay in Gonzaga, Cagayan.
However, no recovered casualty was report from both sides afte the brief encounter.
Lt. Colonel Lawrence Mina, Commander of the army's 17th Infantry Battalion, told that his troops were conducting foot patrol operation in Barangay Pating, Gonzaga town when they came to an encounter with at least 10 fully-armed NPA rebels that resulted into a brief exchange of gunfire.
The gun battle lasted for a period of five minutes after the rebels scampered in the different directions dragging their wounded comrades as evidenced by the scattered bloodstains in their withdrawal routes.
As of press time, Mina said that a hot pursuit operations against the rebels in the area still going on. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
