Army chief prioritizes resources to field units against insurgents

By Freddie G. Lazaro

Narvacan, Ilocos Sur (7 October) -- A top official of the Philippine Army (PA) assured the allotment of necessary resources for all field units for the nationwide campaign against insurgency during his short visit here.

Lt. General Arturo B Ortiz, Commanding General of the Army, said that it is his policy that the frontline units shall be the main concern when it comes to distribution of resources considering that they are the workhorse of the Army.

"This is to enable them (field units) to accomplish the given task of rendering insurgency insignificant within three years," Ortiz said.

General Ortiz, a member of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1979, visited the troops under the 503rd Infantry Brigade stationed in Abra Province and Ilocos area headed by Colonel Essel C. Soriano. The visit was considered as his first in the army's 5th infantry Division since he was installed as the commander of the Philippine Army. Ortiz and Soriano were mistahs in the PMA.

During his visit, Ortiz was briefed on the situation in the army brigade's area of responsibility and its accomplishments in insurgency campaign. An array of recovered enemy firearms and paraphernalia were presented to him.

In addition, he pinned awards for deserving CAFGUs from Abra who meritoriously showed extraordinary performance of duty.

In honor to his visit and promotion to three - star general, the 503rd Brigade organized a dinner party entitled, "An Affair to Remember." It was also notable that cultural dancers from Abra and the WAWAGI Group from Abra School and Institute of Science and Technology (ASIST) gave their best in entertaining the newly promoted general.

General Ortiz claimed that indeed the cultural presentations made him reminisce his younger days as a lieutenant operating in the Cordillera and his boyhood way back in his birthplace at Itogon, Benguet. "The beautiful presentations in which I also took part made me recall my personal attachment to the Cordillerans", he said. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
