PGMA's OTOP benefits disabled persons in Vizcaya

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (8 August) -- More than 2,000 members of the Provincial Federation of Persons with Disabilities(PFPWD) in Nueva Vizcaya have started to venture into livelihood projects in their respective communities after receiving P1 million for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's "One town, One product"(OTOP) program last year.

Orlando Munar, 27, a PFPWD member in Aritao, NV said OTOP assistance has empowered many of their disabled members as productive citizens of their communities and helping their families uplift their economic condition.

OTOP is a priority program of President Arroyo to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. It involves the development and promotion of a product or a service where a town has competitive advantage.

OTOP supports micro, small and medium enterprises(MSMEs) to manufacture offer and marker distinctive products or services by capitalizing on the raw material resources, inherent skills and culture of each town, thus, a branding program where each LGU can identify with and claim ownership.

It offers a comprehensive assistance package through a convergence of services for LGUs, national government agencies and private sector. The package includes business counseling, skills and entrepreneurship trainings, product design and development, appropriate technologies and marketing. The program targets MSMEs with as asset size of not more then P100 million which accounts for about 99% of business establishments in the country.

For the province of Nueva Vizcaya, the following products were identified by the different local government units namely: coconut(Alfonso Castaņeda), vegetables(Ambaguio), onions(Aritao), buko-based products(Bagabag), processed vegetables(Bayombong), Yacon(Dupax del Norte) highland vegetables(Dupax del Sur), citrus(Kasibu), crucifiers(Kayapa), Banana(Quezon), softbroom(Sta. Fe) and rice cake(Solano).

Other town namely Bambang, Diadi and Villaverde are still in the process of identifying and selecting what product to develop and promote under the program. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
